Brand Names vs. Generics
As you may already know I am a frugalista! I will find a sale, coupon, bundle etc. basically anything to get more 'bang for my buck'. So when it came down to my favorite TV watching snack: Ritz Bitz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches I decided to suck it up and purchase the store brand at Target to save about $0.50 off each box. I figured they are salted crackers and peanut butter how 'off' could they be ??
Well, Luckily for me I only purchased one box because they were horrible! It is not often that I find food to be less than satisfying but this time I could not get past a few bites. I tried to like it, I really did. My first thoughts were ok it is a little different lets not be snobby and give this a real try. Second bite I wanted to be sick. Maybe I got a bad box? Nope they weren't expired. The taste was no where  comparable to the brand name what so ever. The peanut butter was slimy and had no actual peanut butter flavor to it. The cracker was very crumbly and more sweet than salty, very bland. Now I am not here to badger all of Target brand products at all !! I am a huge fan of their tortilla chips, milk, cheese and pasta sauces. But this cracker snack was a definite miss for Target generics.
Have you compared brand names to generics before ? What is your fav generic brand ? or maybe you are a brand name snob ? Hey I apparently am one now ! At least when it comes to my snacks ;-) don't be mess with a girls snacks, LOL !

So in a some what related topic hubby is a fan of spicy salty cheesy snacks. So when I went to the store to pick up my Ritz peanut butters I saw these. They must be new because I've never seen them before, have you ? Hubby seemed to enjoy them they were gone in one day !!

and then I saw these new sauces by Prego. Can't wait to try them ... I know I am getting random now but hey talking about food gets me passionate.

  1. we love to shop generic to save money, but man, there are just some thing, very select items where generic just won't cut it! I'm quite picky on a few things and I won't budge because the generic is such a horrible impersonator! The ritz crackers being one of them. I won't buy Generic Ritz crackers. Always name brand for those.

  2. Hi Michelle,

Yes, I agree. I try to buy generic but it is pretty hard sometimes. Ritz, Oreo, and Newtons are big no, no's in my book. I just can't do it. I made a wonderful Oreo truffle at Christmas for my mom. They were so good that we became slightly addicted to them for about a week... what broke our addiction was when I tried to save money buy purchasing generic Oreo's for the recipe, it was awful. Even the kids wouldn't eat them without making a - "What is this?" cringe. If even your kids won't eat them... are we saving money?

    Enjoy your Ritz!

  3. No, I haven't compared the two often. I usually do Trader Joes for any generic switches (since they are usually big brands labeled with Trader Joes) but I'll have to try this!

  4. There are quite a few products that I will not buy generic! Jif peanut butter, Heinz Ketchup to name a few. We buy the generics sometimes, but those are the times that I don't eat those products! lol

  5. I totally agree with all of you !! Hubby is just going to have to accept that I am going to buy the Ritz and he is going to like it and not give me a hard time ;-)

  6. My kids love the mini Ritz cheese crackers, but they really don't last long at all. Some things I may buy generic and others I buy the main brand because usually the generic doesn't taste as good as the brand stuff.
